The short answer

These are not the same product at different prices. They are a scheduler and a management platform, and the choice is really about whether social media is a task or a job.

Choose Buffer if you want posts to go out on a schedule without you being there. It is priced per channel, from a free plan covering 3 channels to Essentials at $5 per month per channel, and it does scheduling, an AI assistant and readable analytics without trying to be more.

Choose Hootsuite if replies, monitoring and reporting matter as much as publishing. Paid plans start at $99 per month for Standard with up to 10 social accounts, rising to $199 for Professional and up to $399 for Advanced, with no free plan.

Where Buffer wins

Buffer wins on price at small scale, decisively. A free plan with 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts each is enough to build a posting habit, and Essentials at $5 per month per channel means three channels cost $15. Against a $99 per month floor, that is a different order of decision.

It wins on simplicity. The product is a queue: set your posting times, fill the queue, done. Tools that do less get used more, and for the person whose social media time is one hour on a Monday, less to learn is the feature.

It also covers a broad set of networks for its price, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, Threads, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Bluesky and Mastodon, with an AI Assistant on every tier including free.

Where Hootsuite wins

Hootsuite wins on everything that happens after publishing. A unified inbox collects comments and direct messages across accounts, so replies are a queue someone works through rather than five apps someone forgets to open. For a business where social messages are effectively support, that is the whole argument.

It wins on monitoring and reporting. Brand monitoring tracks what is said about you beyond your own posts, and the reporting is built for showing results to a manager or a client. Its AI teammate, Wisdom, drafts, recommends and analyses across that surface.

And it wins on account volume: Standard covers up to 10 social accounts, while Professional and Advanced allow unlimited accounts for the same price regardless of how many. An agency with forty client accounts pays a fixed platform price, where per-channel pricing would become absurd.

Verdict

Count your channels and your people. One person with three or four channels who needs consistency should use Buffer, and the free plan is a legitimate starting point rather than a trial.

A team where someone owns social media, where incoming messages must not be missed, and where results get reported to someone else should look at Hootsuite and use the 14-day trial to test the inbox and the reporting specifically, since those are what the price buys.

The mistake to avoid is buying the platform for the scheduling. If all you will use is the queue, you can get that for a tenth of the cost, and the unused features will not make the posts better.
