What it is
Copy.ai started as a copywriting tool and now sells itself as a go-to-market platform. There are two products inside it. The first is a chat interface with unlimited words and a choice of underlying models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini, plus Brand Voice settings. The second is workflows: multi-step automations that take a data source, run a sequence of AI steps against it, and produce output at volume, metered in workflow credits.
The pricing shape follows that split. Chat is a normal small-business subscription. The workflow plans are enterprise-sized, priced from $1,000 per month.
Who it's for (and who it isn't)
The Chat plan fits a small team that wants shared AI writing with brand settings and does not want to buy a seat per person: $29 per month covers 5 seats, which is unusual in this category. If three people occasionally need to draft and one needs it daily, that is a good fit.
The workflow plans fit sales and marketing organizations running repetitive content operations at scale, such as personalizing outreach across thousands of accounts. That is a different buyer with a different budget. For an individual writing occasional content, both halves are more than the situation needs, and Grammarly plus a general assistant will cover it.
Pricing
Copy.ai is paid, with no free plan. Chat is $29 per month billed monthly, or $24 per month billed annually at $288 per year, and includes 5 seats, unlimited words in chat, unlimited chat projects and access to OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models. Growth is $1,000 per month, billed $12,000 per year, with 75 seats and 20,000 workflow credits per month. Expansion is $2,000 per month with 150 seats and 45,000 credits. Scale is $3,000 per month with 200 seats and 75,000 credits. Enterprise is custom, and API access and the wider integration set sit at that tier.
Notice the gap. There is no middle plan between $29 and $1,000 per month, so the workflow product is not something you grow into gradually from the chat plan.
Set it up
Official guide: Getting Started With Chat
- Sign up for Copy.ai on the Chat plan: $29/mo billed monthly, or $24/mo billed annually ($288/yr). There is no free plan. The Chat plan includes 5 seats (a seat is one person who can log in). Have one or two pieces of your own published writing ready, such as a blog article or a social post. You now have a Copy.ai account on the Chat plan.
- Teach Copy.ai your writing style. Click "Brand Voice" in the left navigation menu, then "Create Brand Voice" in the top right corner. Paste in your writing (at least 50 words, no more than 500) and click "Analyze Brand Voice". Fix anything wrong in the description of your tone, style, language and audience, then click "Save Brand Voice". Your Brand Voice is now saved.
- Click "New chat" on your homepage, or the "+" button in the left navigation bar. This opens a chat project, which saves your conversation so you can come back to it. In the top right is a dropdown of AI models (the engines that write the text); keep the default for your first try. You now see an empty chat window.
- Select your Brand Voice in the "Brand Voice" dropdown at the bottom of the chat window, before you send your request. Type a request for a piece you actually need, such as a short LinkedIn post, and press Enter. You now see a reply written in your style.
- Click "Add to Editor" below the reply. You now see the text in an editor where you can change it.
- Highlight a sentence you dislike and click "Rewrite". Edit until you would publish the text under your name. You now see the sentence rewritten in versions you can choose from.
When this works, you have a saved Brand Voice and one piece of writing that you edited yourself, so you can see how much editing the tool still needs from you.
On Growth ($1,000/mo, $12,000/yr): 75 seats and 20K workflow credits/mo. Workflows are chains of AI steps that run a repeated content job for you, and workflow credits are the allowance they use up.
Strengths and limitations
The strength is the seat count at the entry price. Five seats for $29 per month, with a choice of frontier models and unlimited words, is a good deal for a small team compared to per-seat competitors such as Jasper at $69 per seat.
The limitations are the pricing cliff and the depth of the entry plan. Chat is a chat product, so the workflow automation that the marketing emphasises sits behind a jump to $1,000 per month with no intermediate step. API access and the broader integrations are Enterprise features. And as with every generative tool, output needs editing before it represents your business. See Jasper vs Copy.ai.
