What it is
Zendesk is a full customer service platform. Every question that reaches your business, by email, chat, social media, messaging, or phone, becomes a ticket in one system, gets routed to the right person, and carries its history with it. On top of that sit AI agents that recognize what a customer wants and resolve routine questions themselves, an AI-searchable knowledge base, and management tooling like quality scoring and skill-based routing. A marketplace of 1,800+ apps connects it to the rest of your stack.
Who it's for (and who it isn't)
Zendesk fits support teams, plural people, real volume, multiple channels. If customers reach you through three or more channels and questions regularly pass between colleagues, ticketing stops being bureaucracy and starts being how nothing falls through the cracks. It's a strong base for answering repeat customer questions automatically: the AI agents deflect the routine questions and the tickets that remain arrive with context.
It's built for teams, and it's priced for them. A solo founder answering a few emails a day doesn't need ticket routing, QA scoring, or workforce management, and would be paying for all of it. Smaller operations usually start with a lighter tool, like a shared inbox or a chat widget with an AI agent, and grow into a platform like this.
Pricing
Zendesk is paid per agent: Support Team starts from EUR 19 per agent per month for ticketing, and the Suite plans, which add the full omnichannel and AI layer, start from EUR 55 per agent per month, billed annually. There is no free plan. The gap between those two numbers is the honest decision point: the AI and channel breadth live in the Suite tiers, so budget for those if that's why you're coming.
Set it up
Official guide: Getting started with AI agents for customer service
- Go to zendesk.com and select "Try for free" to start a trial of Zendesk Suite, then follow the instructions to set up your account. These steps use a Suite plan, from EUR 55/agent/mo, billed annually, because the help center articles the AI agent reads are listed for Suite plans, not for Support Team (from EUR 19/agent/mo). When setup ends, you see a list of setup tasks.
- In the task list, find the "Connect email" task and click "Start". Select "Zendesk email", click "Next", then "Done". Customers must write to this new address, so put it on your website. You now see a new Zendesk support address.
- Think of one question your customers ask most. Open your help center, click "Add" in the top menu bar, select "Article", and write the answer in plain words. In the article settings panel, check "Viewing permissions" and choose "Visible to everyone". Put the article in a section, a folder for articles. Publishing makes the article public, so check the text first. Click the drop-down arrow on the "Save" button, select "Publish", and the article now appears in your help center.
- Open the AI agents workspace, click "Dashboard" in the sidebar, click "Create AI agent", and select "for Email". Under "Select one brand and knowledge base", pick your brand. If it asks, click "Activate knowledge base". Click "Continue". The "Set language and tone of voice" page opens.
- In "Business profile", write one or two short, factual sentences on what your company does, and no instructions. Under "Select tone of voice", click "Select" on "Professional". Click "Continue". The "Set up your AI agent on email and web form" page appears.
- Click "Save and close" to keep the AI agent without it going live. Open "Test your AI agent", ask the questions your customers ask most, and read each answer. You now see an answer to each question, so you can judge them before going live.
- Activation makes the AI agent answer real customers straight away, so do this only after your tests. Click "Go to activation", select the email channel, and click "Activate on channels". Your AI agent is now live.
Zendesk counts an automated resolution each time the AI agent resolves a question without a person. Each plan includes an allowance of them at no extra cost; beyond it you pay per resolution or buy more in advance. To see how the AI agent does, open the "Reporting dashboard" in the AI agents workspace.
When this works, a customer emails your new Zendesk support address and gets an answer drawn from your help center articles. A question the AI agent cannot resolve goes to a person. To use it for repeat customer questions, add an article for every question that keeps coming back.
Strengths and limitations
Zendesk's strengths are completeness and room to grow: every channel in one place, capable AI agents, and the management layer a scaling team eventually needs. You are unlikely to outgrow it.
The limitations are cost and weight. Per-agent Suite pricing adds up quickly, there's no free tier, and small teams use a fraction of what they're paying for. Comparable AI deflection for a smaller operation is available cheaper, see Zendesk vs Freshdesk for the closest direct alternative.
